21 steps to an amazing garden for beginners

Weed your paving

Nothing looks worse than weedy paths and paving. Get a wheeled stool or cushioned kneeler to save your back and replant really weed-prone spots with sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima) or Mexican fleabane (Erigeron karvinskianus) to crowd out undesirables.

Tidy up boundaries

If they are wooden, consider giving them a lick of paint. Dark colours make fences recede and also provide an effective backdrop for plants. Timber doors and gates that are looking a little jaded can be spruced up with a new coat of colour (or just black or white).
